This is a wonderful project from a very talented, hard working, amazing filmmaker, Stephen Martin.  Please take a look and become a contributor if you’re into genre filmmaking - gothic and whimsical storytelling, kung fu, blood, gore, and amateur taxidermy… need I say more?!

Please give this serious consideration, because Stephen’s first film, Dead Friends, was really good, won awards, and made the rounds. I’d love to see him succeed with this sequel, because he truly deserves it!

My partner and co-founder of Curio Media, Karen Lam, on Urban Rush. This is one of many interviews - both video and print - that she did as part of Vancouver’s Women in Film and Television Festival (March 8 - 11).  In fact, this is an official Women in Film Festival video interview where she talks in depth about being a female filmmaker and her inspiration for making horror films.

Congratulations To Vancouver Viscera Filmmakers

Last night’s screening of the 2012 Viscera Film Festival in Vancouver - and Curio Media’s inaugural event - was a resounding success, and the audience really appreciated “female response horror”.

Many thanks go out to special guest host Fiona Forbes, the filmmakers who attended - Karen Lam and Lori Bowen, and our sponsors Super Channel and Pac Blue Printing.  We also send our thanks to The Rio Theatre for hosting the screening, and IRL Events for their help promoting and spreading the word.

The films were judged by Bill Hurst, Telefilm Canada Executive, and Rachel Talalay, producer and director, amongst other films, of Freddy’s Dead and Tank Girl.

As last night’s event proved, the films raise the bar for indie filmmakers and showcase the true potential for new voices and new visions.  This is what genre is meant to be.

How A Non-Studio Film Is Storming iTunes

Stained is a movie few in the mainstream have heard about. It is an independent genre film by my good friend, Karen Lam. But, this gem of a movie, which has been making its way around the film festival circuit, getting critical acclaim and many blog mentions (thanks in part to Tinsel Korey of Twilight fame being a star in the film), was released today on iTunes, hitting the #51 within hours.

Why is this so significant? Because it is unheard of.  A low-budget, non-studio, non-mega-marketing-budget independent film from Canada is racing up the charts on the biggest media platform in the world.

I’m extremely proud of Karen and her team for the way they’ve been able to reach an audience for their film, for their determination in getting “eyeballs” on it, and in going for what many would have deemed impossible: top ranks on iTunes.

The “how” of this is directly related to their audience outreach and engagement strategy through social media, through press and blogs, interviews and reviews, and to Karen and Tinsel personally reaching out to their audiences via Twitter, Facebook and email. They are achieving what many independent filmmakers want to achieve, and what many artists and creatives want to achieve. And they prove it CAN be done!

I’d like to ask anyone who views the trailer, or the film and seriously likes it, to please leave a review on iTunes. The more reviews, the higher the ranking. And the more help this film from seemingly nowhere, may just set a new benchmark for all independent filmmakers!
